The Appenzell Cattle Dog originated in Switzerland, a region called Appenzell, where it was used to guard cattle. The Appenzeller is a medium-sized, muscular dog of lively temperament and excellent working ability.

Also known as the Appenzeller Sennenhund, Appenzell Cattle Dog, or simply the Appenzeller, this breed was used as a farm dog and cattle dog. This is one of the four Swiss Mountain Dogs, distinguished from the other three by its tightly curled, spitz tail. After helping with the movement of the cattle, it was employed to keep guard over the herds and, on market days, pulled carts with farm produce to the market stall. When avalanches occured, it was used as a rescue dog.

This breed is always described as intelligent, high-spirited, self-assured, fearless, cheerful, but suspicious of strangers. Visit MyAppenzell.com - a web site about the folkloric art of Appenzell. You can order order original top-quality products from Appenzell. Appenzeller Pedigree Databank
