Afghan Hound is a large long-legged dog with silky coat which stands 24 to 28 inches and weighs 50 to 60 pounds. It originated in Afghanistan where it was used as a hunting and falconing dog. It was brought to Europe in the 19th century by British soldiers. The Afghan Hound belongs to sight hounds group. Afghans are usually aloof with strangers but very gentle with the members of their families. Afghan Hounds are fortunate in having a reputation for being hardy dogs with very few of widespread canine hereditary diseases. However, when visiting a litter, a potential owner should ask to see documentation of the litter's parents' clearance from the OFA or PennHIP (USA) for hip dysplasia. The parents also should be free of juvenile cataracts. Afghan Hound's temperament can vary from line to line, hence socialization and obedience training titles should be of more importance than the number of show champions in the parents' pedigrees.
