American Eskimo Dog Breeders
The American Eskimo Dog is a small to medium size companion dog of sweet nature and striking beauty. Closely related to Samoyed and other spitz-type breeds, Eskie should not be confused with Eskimo Dog - a large sledding draft breed very popular with the polar explorers in the early 1900s and now referred to as Mackenzie.
After seeing several American Eskimo Dogs, you probably have already formed an opinion which size appeals to you. However, if undecided, consider that as a jogging companion and a more intimidating watchdog the standard should be a better choice. Some of the smaller sizes may be more vocal and active and may not be good with small children. When visiting a litter, a potential owner should ask to see documentation of the American Eskimo Dog litter's parents' clearance from the OFA or PennHIP (USA) for hip dysplasia (HD), and from CERF for hereditary eye diseases (PRA). Ask the breeder if patellar luxation is common in his line.
