When visiting a litter, a potential owner should ask to see documentation of the Belgian Malinois litter's parents' clearance from the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA). Don't just take the breeder's word for it: see the parents' clearance documentation. All Malinois that are bred should have non-dysplastic hips and elbows as determined by an x-ray and approved by the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA). Reputable breeders of Belgian Malinois will also have their puppies tested with a slit lamp for the presence of congenital cataracts. You should also ask to see the pups' and parents' CERF documentation to make sure that the parents are free from PRA (progressive retinal atrophy - a serious inherited eye disease that results in total blindness).
