Common Grackle (Quiscalus quiscula)
Common Grackle (Quiscalus quiscula)

© John J. Mosesso

Length: 10-12.5 in.
Habitat: farmlands, groves, suburbs, parks; usually near water.

Before the trees have begun to leaf out in the North, the Common Grackles arrive. Soon courting males are posturing in the treetops, puffing up their glossy plumage, spreading their long tails, and uttering their rasping chu-seeck. Larger species of grackles are the Great-tailed (Quiscalus mexicanus) of southern farmlands and the Boat-tailed (Quiscalus major), a salt-marsh bird.
