Introducing a Puppy
Hello, I hope you can help because I am worried about introducing my new puppy to my two older dogs. We have two outside dogs, a 5 year old Border Collie mix and a 10 year old Rottweiler/Chow mix, and just a few days ago took in a 11 week Yorkshire terrier puppy. The new puppy will spend most of her time inside but I am worried about the other dogs showing aggression when we let the puppy out to go pee. At the moment, she hasn’t been introduced to either of the dogs. The Rottweiler mix is used to being the alpha female and has shown aggression towards other dogs in the past (biting, snapping, and growling). She acted this way when we introduced our Border Collie to her years ago and I am scared that she might go too far since the puppy is so tiny. Just wondering if you have any suggestions that might help this situation.
That you,
Christina

Hi my name is Amanda and we have brought our new puppy home today and introduced him to our female 9yr old staffy, and I am a bit worried, she doesn't get along with female dogs but always had no problems with males, so our puppy is a male, she seems ok with him but she wont let him do anything, she keeps walking in front of him and stopping him from going anywhere, she wont allow him to come to any of our family, she is fine when he is lying down. This is day one should I be worried about this behavior from the 9yr old female or will it settle down , and do you have any tips on making things a little easier for my little pup?

We used to have two dogs
We used to have two dogs. I had to put one down because of a stroke, the doctor thinks. He would have been 14 years old this last Sept. He was a purebred German Shepherd. My other dog is a 4 year old purebred Golden Retriever. He is doing great as a very loving and affectionate dog and for having the house to himself. I was just wonder how it would be for him if I got a new purebred German Shepherd as a companion. Both dogs would be males. As before both dogs where males and where the best of friends. My question really boils down to, will the German Shepherd grow up and dominate him? I know, its really sad that I am worried about the feeling of the older dog. Is this wrong to feel this way. Or will eveything just find a way to work itself out?

Hello, I currently have a 12 mnths old westie called Leo, he is really good when not with other dogs, otherwise is goes really excited and sometimes, we are not even sure if it was an attack or just rough play. But recently, my neighbors, whose got a whippet or something, which is also crazy, got another dog- a yorkie. And I was walking to her and she told me her whippet was also a lot like Leo before she got the yorkie,he wasnt socialized enough when he was a puppy, just like Leo. My family and I have been considering buying another westie for a while now. Do you think Leo would appreciate this companion? Will the puppy suit our life? Is there anything I should do before bringing the puppy home??
P.S.- Leo has attended puppy training and hence has improved a lot, but still not perfect, so we are thinking that getting another Westie would socialise him??
Thank you very much.

Hi, I have a small 1 year old dog and I'm not really sure what breed she is but i believe she is a chihuahua mix
Hi,
I have a small 1 year old dog and I'm not really sure what breed she is but i believe she is a chihuahua mix. She is very playful and is not aggressive at all. I'm planning on getting an akita puppy in about a month but I'm worried that they won't get along especially after reading that akitas don't do well with other small animals. Would the puppy's gender be any problem for socialization? Would it even be possible to have them together?

I have a 2 year-old miniature poodle (although she's about the size of a large toy poodle) and we've recently got a 4-month-old standard poodle puppy
I have a 2 year-old miniature poodle (although she's about the size of a large toy poodle) and we've recently got a 4-month-old standard poodle puppy.
They seem to get along until the puppy will try to play with the older, smaller dog. The puppy will snap and bark at the older dog in a playful way, and the older dog takes it as a threat and goes all-out to get the puppy to be submissive by growling, snarling, chasing, and snapping back. The puppy continues to taunt the smaller dog because it thinks that the smaller dog is playing when she is obviously not.
Help PLEASE!!!! We keep thinking that the older, smaller dog will get the point across that she is the alpha dog in this home- but the puppy thinks she's playing!!!
What should we do? Let it go on?
Help!

My mom just got a new mixed breed puppy and I'm trying to make the transition run smoothly for my 14 year old Shih Tzu Scooter
My mom just got a new mixed breed puppy and I'm trying to make the transition run smoothly for my 14 year old Shih Tzu Scooter. Now Scooter in all her life has been afraid of other animals (The Guinea Pigs when we had them for example, despite eventually warming up to them because they stayed in their cages.) and to new puppy Lucy this is no different. I really want them to be friends, and apparently Lucy wants to as well as whe hopped to the edge of her playpen when I brought Scooter over. Is there anything I need to do about introducing a new puppy to a dog who has been afraid of other animals?

I have a 4 year old yorkie who is a delight and has always played well with other dogs
I have a 4 year old yorkie who is a delight and has always played well with other dogs. My son brought home a 6 week old chocolate lab puppy this week and my yorkie is not happy about it at all. If the puppy gets close to any of us, Peanut (Yorkie) would charge at the new puppy and try to snap at it. We have managed to get Peanut to stay put when the puppy approaches my son or I by rewarding him with praise and petting. However, while he is now staying his distance, he is salvitating (slobbering) to the point that it is dripping from his mouth. I have never seen him have any signs of salvitating in any situation in the past 3 years and 8 months that I have had him. Is there any explaination for this? Please advise.

Hello
Hello. We have introduced a new puppy (minature bulldog) to our two existing dogs (English Bulldog and Chocolate Lab), which are two and one half years old and have been raised together from day one. We have had the pup for two days now and the EB and CL are not warming up to the MB yet and, in fact, have each growled at the MB a few times when the MB has gotten close. The EB and the CL are both acting distant and are not their normal selves. We really would like to keep the puppy, but are concerned as to whether we have an impossible situation on our hands. Any suggestions?

We have a 2 year old male neutered Cocker Spaniel who is a very well adjusted dog at home and with other dogs
We have a 2 year old male neutered Cocker Spaniel who is a very well adjusted dog at home and with other dogs. We are considering getting another cocker spaniel puppy to keep him company. Does anyone have advice about crating the new puppy when the older dog isn't crated anymore? We let the 2 year old have run of the downstairs when we are not there but we won't be letting a puppy have the same freedom. Has anyone had experience if it works keeping one dog in a crate and one dog with freedom?

I have a question concerning the adjustment of an older dog to a puppy
I have a question concerning the adjustment of an older dog to a puppy. I have had my Boston Terrier puppy for about a week, and am very concerned about my 2-year-old Boston's treatment of her. She is a very mild-mannered dog who is so excited about her new little sister that she goes wild with enthusiasm. She pushes her and jumps on her in an attempt to play. Our feisty little puppy wants to play too, but soon becomes overwhelmed and begins to snarl, bite, and chase. After a short itme she comes to me for protection. Any ideas on how I can get my older dog to calm down and develop a more peaceful relationship with the puppy?

I have a 3 year old beagle
I have a 3 year old beagle. He was the 2nd dog to come into our house and we had no problems with our black lab. Our lab died last year and now we would like to adopt another lab. Our beagle has become the center of attention for a year, but he was very upset when our lab died. He wouldn't eat or play. He seems fine now, but I don't want to go through that again. Our beagle is not great with other dogs and I don't want to adopt a lab unless I know that he will behave. The breeder is in our neighborhood, but if I bring the beagle to their home, it will be their territory. Should I ask if I can bring the puppy to our home and see how it goes.
Thank you, Karen

I have a five-year-old dachshund, and recently found a two-year-old dachshund that looks almost identical
I have a five-year-old dachshund, and recently found a two-year-old dachshund that looks almost identical. The new one is from the pound and would have been put down if I did not get her; however, my older dog has decided to spend more time alone, and does not want attention from me. When I pet her, she walks away, and if I call her, she comes and sits with her back to me. I feel like a traitor.

My boyfriend and I have an eight month old lab who we love very much
My boyfriend and I have an eight month old lab who we love very much. He is training her to be a duck hunter and also involves her in the local retriever club. I would really like to get into training my own puppy and would also like to get a friend for our baby. I was just wondering at what age we should introduce a new puppy to the current puppy. I am going to school now and graduating in June so we would be waiting until this winter, probably December or so, which would put our baby over a year. Do you have any suggestions? I don't want to introduce one too early for fear that all of our hard work would go down the drain and she would revert back to her old annoying puppy ways. Thanks!

Hi, We have a problem with the new puppy we got
Hi, We have a problem with the new puppy we got. We currently have a 1.5 year old American Staff. and he is the most docile dog I ahve ever met. He has his terrier bursts of uncontrolable energy, btu other than that he is very calm and never show agression. We just brought home a new puppy last week of the same breed. She is 6 months old. Well being the puppy that she is she insists on playing with our older dog, and when he feels like playing they romp around and the only thing I worry too much about with him is him being clumsy and falling on her. But she has taken to biting at his face, ears and legs. He has started to get scratch marks on the sids of his face from her puppy teeth and I worry that she is being to rough on him. He has not made any attempt to put her in her place other than some gentle pinning which she easily squirms out of. Should I worry about him being hurt, or will he put a stop to it if she gets to rough for him to handle?
Thanks,
Bill

We are bringing one of our male Yorkies new male puppies into the house in two weeks
We are bringing one of our male Yorkies new male puppies into the house in two weeks. Any special instructions for bringing male offsprings into a house. Our resident Yorkie is very social with other dogs and people. We are both retired and have two homes and move back and forth between both for days at a time. Sometimes we are together and other times at separate houses with either person keeping the dog. Our resident Yorkie grew up with this movement and adapts well to both houses and moving back and forth.

I have a 2 year old mixed Black Lab Male
I have a 2 year old mixed Black Lab Male. we just adopted a 9 month old mixed black lab puppy- female
The male will no walk by the female. He will approach her rarely to check her out . If he wants to come in a room where he has to pass her, he will not enter.
The hair on his back has been raised from time to time, a sign of defensiveness. He also also growled & bared his teeth .
The puppy has not exhibited any sings of aggressiveness. But she wants to play.
Whe she approaches him, he backs away.
They haev seperate kennels & sleep in seperate rooms. They have seperate bowls for water & food but in the same room. Just his toys but we picked them up.
Advice?
Thanks.

I have a 4 year old black lab and have just introduced a long haired doxie puppy into the family
I have a 4 year old black lab and have just introduced a long haired doxie puppy into the family. For the most part the lab ignores the pup, but will snap here and there. I'm not sure if he would actually bit the pup, as Porter has never done so with another dog. I'm stressed and worried that Porter will not adapt to the new dog. Any advice would be helpful

Hope you can help
Hope you can help...FAST! Did a poor job of socializing my peekapoo, now 2 yrs. old. Thought a new playmate might help with her fear of sounds and other dogs or people. Bought a yellow Lab puppy but haven't picked him up yet. Need to know best way to integrate him into our family of two...my very antisocial dog and me. He is precious with me, has been a huge comfort since my husband died, but I didn't know I was supposed to socialize him. I want this to work....Please help!!!

I have a two year old German Shepherd, female who gets along tremendously with people
I have a two year old German Shepherd, female who gets along tremendously with people. Very inquisitive and curious about everything. For the most part, she gets along with other dogs in the fact that she ignores them. Last night my current roommate got a puppy and my dog started snapping at the pup. I thought she was playing at first and got a little excited since she really doesnt play with other dogs, but then the pup yelped and I had to tell mine to go lay down. I tried being with her as they brought the puppy closer and she kept growling at it. I understand that she will want more space but is there any way that I can teach her to be more playful with other dogs? I am moving out of my current home to be with my girlfriend and we are going to get a puppy together. She is afraid that my dog will attack her puppy. I want to be able to have them both in the house or both in the yard without any problems. She currently has heartworms and her treatment starts soon. Before her treatment is over, my girlfriend wants to have the puppy at the house. I think this would be a good time to introduce the puppy since she will have less energy and will be more apt to have a dog get closer.
What can I do to be able to have her play with other dogs rather than just wait until I throw a ball or frisbee? What can I do so that she can get along with all the other dogs?
Thanks,
Victor

My puppy (Cookie) will be one year this month
My puppy (Cookie) will be one year this month. Gabe brought home a puppy Saturday and my sweet loving cocker spainel has turned into a growling mouthy overbearing dog. This dog is only going to be here until we can find him a home. He belonged to a little girl who ended up in the hospital due to alergic reaction to the puppy. He is almost 3 months. I am not sure of the breed. He looks kinda like scooby do! Some have speculated he is a Rotty/Doby mix. He is dominated by Cookie but he keeps coming back for more. I have a cage in the basement but I don't think it is healthy for him to be isolated until we find him a home. He needs lots of attention in the housebreaking area. How can I get back my sweet loving Cocker while fostering this puppy.
New to the dog world.

Hi,
I have a problem with my 1 yr old Shih Tsu
Hi, I have a problem with my 1 yr old Shih Tsu. She is having trouble adjusting to a new puppy that I just bought-a 2 month old male chow chow-spontaneously, because I thought Shih Tzu are naturally friendly to other dogs. But the Shih Tzu is acting really jealous and has stopped eating. I was wondering what I could do to help adjust my Shih Tzu to the new addition?
Thank You!

I am looking for thoughts on introducing a puppy and a 5 year old dog
I am looking for thoughts on introducing a puppy and a 5 year old dog. I have the 5 year old dog and my mom is picking up a 9 week old puppy this weekend. They will spend a lot of time together but they won't be living together. Sholud we do it right away or wait for a while? My dog has always been good around other puppies she has met (she is an Aussie, so she is vocal and usually herds them though). Any thoughts?
Thanks,
Kate

Hi, I am writing to you out of desperation
Hi,
I am writing to you out of desperation. My husband and I have a 6 about to be 7 year old male Maltese named Shadow. We just got another puppy as of yesterday 2/7/09, who is a Labrador Pit mix, who we have named Shottas. I am so worried and confused. The first night Shadow slept on the same blanket with the puppy and things just seemed fine. However, on day two my Maltese is growling all the time at the new puppy and Shottas is whining for Shadow and wants to be around him however Shadow doesn't seem to want anything to do with him. Can you please help?
We also have other issue with Shadow (i.e. the his constant need to be the center of attention, and his constant whining, etc..) we just knew things would go well but they appear not to be and my husband is already fallen for this new dog and things that things will change. I am unsure about this, Please help! I am scared because of the rep that pits get however I understand that he is a mixture- he seems sadden when Shadow ignores him and I really don't know what to do...
Please any advice is greatly appreciated.

We have just introduced a new long haired girl Chihuahua puppy to our two current dogs
We have just introduced a new long haired girl chihuahua puppy to our two current dogs. Our boy black lab is fine with her, but our boy pit bull mix is not so good. He tries to bite her and he barks and growls deeply. We have tried putting her in her kennel and letting him sniff it but he buts the kennel so it falls and we are worried she will get hurt. We are not ignoring him or favoring the new dog. Any ideas?

We are desperate! We currently have 3 dogs, 2 females and 1 male
We are desperate! We currently have 3 dogs, 2 females and 1 male. The male is a Husky and very energetic, where the 2 females are not and get annoyed with him. So, we got a border collie puppy. When the husky (McGraw) tried to play with the pup, one of the females attacks him. A very scary kind of attack - something she has never done before. We realize she is probably mothering the pup, but when the pup tried to play with her, she attacks the pup. It's because the pup is grabbing her ears, tail and whatever she can get a hold of to play. I know we should let the female show her dominance to the pup, but she is biting to the point the puppy screams and cries and runs away from us. We even thought her eye may have been damaged. We don't want to put the pup anywhere near the other dogs for her safety, but at the same time, we don't want to isolate her. Because of this problem, she is spending all her days in my daughter's room or in the room we fixed up for her (she won't stay in a crate - she gets hysterical).
What can we do?? We don't want to take her back, but we don't want any of the dogs to get hurt! Thank you!
