I have a 10 week old Pekingese pup who weighs just at 8 ounces
I have a 10 week old Pekingese pup who weighs just at 8 ounces. He was born with a cleft lip and has been tube fed since birth. He has trouble with his blood sugar, and he has had one instance of pneumonia. I was wondering if anyone else has had a similar instance and if so please let me know what the out come was with your baby. My little "Stitch" is a joy. He runs and plays, loves to chew on my socks, and furniture. He seems so happy and good tempered. I have his mother also, and what is weird is he will ignore her and come to me every time. I believe he thinks I am his mommy. Our Vet seems to think he will get no bigger than 2 pounds. Sadly that wont be big enough to under go a surgery to repair his lip. So I foresee tube feedings for life. Please if anyone can offer suggestions I would love to hear from you.

I have 2 four week old Pekingese pups
I have 2 four week old Pekingese pups. One is doing great the other seems to have trouble breathing out of her nose. This just started a few days ago. The mother and other pup are healthy I'm worried that this pup may have a problem.

I rated the Pekingese as three stars p
"...I rated the Pekingese as three stars p; maybe I should have said four p; I'm not sure p; maybe a three-and-one-half! We have a beautiful three-year-old male Peke that we have owned since he was five weeks old.The good things about a Peke is that they are not yappy, running around all the
time, wanting you to DO something. He just hangs with the family. Now for the bad stuff. He has that male dominance thing p; he does NOT like other dogs p; I can't even take him to PetsMart anymore he acts up so bad. He barks, growls, and acts like a fool. (HIS dog at home is okay, other dogs are
NOT okay.) Also he is a little bit too independent."

Hip and knee problems
Be very careful buying your peke puppy, especially out of state. I bought a 3 month
old puppy who turned out to have hip displacia and luxating patella on both sides.
Surgical correction is prohibitively expensive; our only alternative was putting him to
sleep or letting him live with it on anti-inflammatories until he got older and disabled
from it. What a choice! Get your puppy certified by a vet to be free of hip or knee
problems. Your breeder may not reveal or even know.

I was wondering if you could maybe help me understand as to why my Pekingese died
I was wondering if you could maybe help me understand as to why my Pekingese died. (Please excuse spelling and grammer, he just died two days a go and I'm still having trouble with it).
Well, he was ten years old and from what I have been reading I see?that is about the average lifespan of this breed but I need to understand something more. He had this strange habit of chewing on things such as pillowcases, sheets, and blankets, and even his own fur.?For some reason, he never did this as a puppy but grew the habit as he became older. We had tried so hard to get him to stop but he just wouldn't. He had all the attention of the three of us living here so there is no way he did it out of depression or sadness.?Well, a few days a go after we had given him a bath we layed him on a blanket as we dryed him off (as we have done many
times before and never had problems with it.) We had to leave him for a few minutes, when we came back we dicovered that he had swallowed a peiece of string that he had unraveled from the blanket that he was on.
We thought that he would just pass it through when he pooped or that he would throw it up (as he has done whenever he had swalloed some of his fur). But the next day he became really sick and wanted to do nothing but lay down. He did drink water but very little. Why we did not take him to
the vet I will never understand and will be mad at myself for the longest time for not doing so. We thought that in a few days he would be back to his old self as usual. Well, the next day my Grandfather woke up to find out that my sweet dog that I had loved so much as gone. He never appeared to have any other problems and never had to take him to the vet ever becides his yearly check-up and shots. Was it the string that killed him or could it have been something else? Please help me understand.
And, just so you know, him being a little sick from chewing on his own fur in the past is a rare thing. 99.9% of his life was lived healthy and happy. I hope that I dont sound like a horrible person for not taking him to the vet but we really thought that he was going to be ok.
Thank you.

I have reached your site and read about all on pekingese heart problems
I have reached your site and read about all on pekingese heart problems. I have 16 year old, she suffered from many problems but lately she was fine only with signs of elderness. 15 days ago she totally lost apetite, and was drinking no water.. We took her to vet's and they started giving b vitamin injections, and some other to help her which in turn was no use..later on thay started serum daily for balancing. she still dose not eat, and is really in a crushed up situation because of the needles and everything.
The critical point is; 3 days ago, they gave atropin to help her intestines. the effect was she was almost parallyed and was crying for almost 6 hours..later on she was calmed with diazem.. now she is only sleeping, sometimes having respiratory problems, we try ventolin spray. my mom is a pahrmacist and she was usually giving her digoxin (o.25 mg/4 a day)5 days a week. now we beleive we should go with heart and respiratory tratment, but there are no vet available specialized on this issue. they only give regular treatments.
we know that she wont turn to her youth days, but at least we want her to eat and drink a little and be as comfortable as possible on her last days... by the way since the atropin shot, she cannot walk or hardly stand for 10 seconds... thanks a bunch.

I have owned Pekingese for 34 years now, and have experienced a lot of ailments and illnesses during that time
I have owned Pekingese for 34 years now, and have experienced a lot of ailments and illnesses during that time. However, I recently acquired a Peke puppy given up by his owners that has a severe 'coughing/snorting' issue. He is up to date on all his shots and tested negative for heartworm. In the past I have experienced this with my other Pekes, but only occasionally. This new puppy has been doing this quite often. I
have been told it is a 'reverse sneeze' (whatever that is), but it sounds more like he's gasping for air. When it happens he comes to me to be picked up and I rub his throat and it subsides. Is this something I should be more concerned about since it happens often? Concerned, Mary

jordie's dad
We have a 13 y.o. Pekingese, whom we've had to leave in the Chicago area with our youngest daughter (age 29). We moved to CT about 3 yrs ago. We had a lot of problems with him which began when we did bring him here with us shortly after our move. First, he developed significant breathing stridor issues when we'd go on a car ride of any length...very unusual since he always enjoyed even the longest car rides, including the one from IL to CT. We had surgery to remove some sacks from his trachea, but found that we had to leave him in Chicago. When we tried to return with him to CT the first time, the stridor began after 45 minutes and became very difficult for all of us. It was at that point that we asked our daughter to care for him and she agreed. She's great with dogs and was living at the time in our large home in Chicago with a large yard...very good accomodations.
She has since gotten her own TWO dogs, both of whom our Peke "tolerates." They all get along fine. However, our daughter has moved out of our house to a smallish place of her own. To make matters worse, our little guy has peripheral neuropathy and almost became paralyzed about a year and a half ago. We had back surgery for him by a specialist and he came back really well. He gets around fine...not like a puppy, but he's perfectly mobile and can even fun and get up a few steps by himself. When we're around, he seems happy and upbeat. We're all happy we did the surgery.
An after effect, however, is that he is now becoming incontinent...not unusual with this type of neuropathy. Because they're now in such a confined space and because my daughter's house doesn't lend itself easily to isolating our little guy, it's all now driving her crazy.
I'm beside myself, wondering what to do. My wife spends considerable time in Chicago. I work long hours in NYC and so he can't live with us because he can't be boarded for my wife's long absences and he can't make the trip back and forth. His heart, lungs, and mental alertness are fine. Should such a dog, my best friend for 13years, be put to sleep for becoming an inconvenience. I'll admit that he spends most of his time laying around - partially because of old age, partially because this is not an active breed.
I'm looking for words of wisdom from anyone who's had similar issues. I'm very depressed at the thought of losing someone - even though I see him for a total of about 3-4 weeks a year. At the same time, I need to be fair to my daughter. Very difficult. I hope someone out there reads this long and impassioned e-mail and has something to say.

illness
About a week ago, my 10-yr. old female peke began having "spells" - she gets really stiff and seems to have tremors. At first, she was having about 2 of these a day. After a couple days, they tapered off to one every 2-3 days. They are sudden and not seemingly related to any other event, and may last from 30 min. to an hour. Then she is OK - lively and happy until the next one. Any ideas about what is causing this problem??

Mouth Ulcers
My 6 year old female Pekingese has developed ulcers in her mouth next to both top eye teeth in the front of her mouth. I have been watching them for several weeks now and they are not getting bigger. Read an internet article about pancreatic enzymes causing this in a German Shepherd. I was giving her Wobenzyme and stopped immediately. Any help or advice I can get on this subject would be appreciated.
