Foods are crucial

Fish should never be fed more than they can consume within a few minutes. Any food that is not eaten will simply be left to waste, depleting the aquarium of vital oxygen. Fish will not starve if left for a week or so during vacations, providing that they have been well fed beforehand.

Freezing and freeze-drying also mean that live aquatic foods can be preserved. These are ideal, as living creatures, either water-borne or terrestrial, naturally contain all the nutrients that fish need. They also make a welcome treat, if offered only occasionally.

Green foodstuff includes lettuce, spinach, and algae. In order to fully satisfy the feeding requirements of the herbivores fish, lettuce and greenstuff can be introduced into the aquarium if the aquarium algae is too sparse. The lettuce and spinach should be blanched in hot wter first and it is a good idea to clamp it between the two halves of a glass-cleaning magnet before placing it in the bottom of the aquarium. In this way the fish can bite and tear at it much easier. The reason it needs to blanched first is to eliminate the cellulose. Carbohydrate in the form of cellulose is found in the cell walls of plants and thi sis indigestible for fish. Spinach is a very good substitute for algae and is high in iron and clcium. The alternative is to set up a separtae tank to grow cuttings of plants and place hem inthe main aquarium at regular intervals to satisfy the needs of large herbivores fish. most fish are content if their diet is supplemented with frozen greenstuff.
