Fish Disease Treatment
Recently, broad-spectrum antibiotics have become available to hobbyists. Antibiotics combat microbes that cause diseases in aquarium fish. They are manufactured for aquarium use, usually in 250 mg capsules, placed directly into the aquarium at the rate of 1 capsule or tablet for every 10 gallons (38 liters) of aquarium water. Many familiar antibiotics can be used to treat fish, including penicillin, ampicillin, tetracycline, amoxicillin, cephalexin, erythromicin, and ketoconazole. The packahes usually contain 100 doses. Most nonspecific fish diseases can be treated using this kind of medication. Also fish that have been treated with antibiotics tend to be much more resistant to infection.
There are also "bio-bandages" available today. This kind of treatment quickly and effectively treats open wounds and cysts. They are much more effective than open baths or dip treatments. Bio-bandages are gel-based topical wound preparations that contain a combination of the antibiotic neomycin and a proprietary vitamin-polymer formula for quicker healing. However, the utmost care is needed for their application.
