Scottish Fold - A Breed Apart

The Scottish Fold cat occurred as a spontaneous mutation in farm cats in Sscotland. The breed has been established by crosses to British Shorthair and domestic cats in Scotland and England. In America, the outcross is the American and British Shorthair. All true Scottish Fold cats trace their pedigree to Susie, the first fold-ear cat discovered by the founders of the breed, William and Mary Ross.

There are negative things that influenced the development of the Scottish Fold breed and the lack of its acceptance in European countries. If bothe parents pass the gene that determines folded ears to their offsprings, there is the strong probability that the kitten will have several health problems, including lameness, swallen feet or inability to walk at all. This is the reason why two Folds should never be mated.

There is also the Longhair Scottish Fold variety, which was developed by crossing to a longhaired breed, such as Persian. The Longhair Scottish Folds cannot be paired with the recommended British or American Shorthairs. It is still called Scottish Fold and this is rather unusual. More commonly, when a longhaired variety of a shorthaired breed is created, it is given a totally different breed name. The Siamese, Abyssinian, Manx, and Russian Blue in their longhaired varieties respectively become the breeds of Balinese, somali, Cymric, and Nebelung.

The Scottish Fold has a character the embraces the very best of temperament from its ancestors - the American and British shorthairs. The breed is charming and gentle with humans. It gets on with anyone - adults, children, other cats and other pets.

The color varieties of the Scottish fold include blue, red, white, black, cream, chinchilla, smokes, tabbies, patched and bi-colors. The Fold enjoys the outdoor but prefers to reside indoors once the weather changes and becomes wet and cold.
