Frisian Water Dog, Wetterhoun

The Frisian Water dog is a strong, sturdy breed with geat stamina that has been used for hundreds of yeards to hunt otter. Originally called Wetterhoun, the dog was used by Frisians who lived and preserved a unique culture on the Frisian Islands in Holland.

The Frisian Water dog is reserved about strangers and an ideal guard-dog. Active, brave and fearless, with powerful teeth abd scissor bite, the dog can work many hours in the water. At the same time the Wetterhoun has a very affectionate and sensitive nature and becomes very attached to his family. If you consider make this breed your family companion, please know that this is a working breed with strong hunting instincts that and can be aggressive to other pets. The Frisian is an excellent retriever and hunts very close to his master. It can be stubborn and requires firm and consistent training.

Size 21.5-22.5 inches at shoulders

Coat With the exception of the head and legs, the body is covered with tight curls consisting of firm, strong tufts of hair.

Color Solid black or brown, or black with white markings, or brown with white markings. Ticking or roan in the white are permitted. The color is dark-brown for dogs with a black ground color, and brown for dogs with a brown ground color.

This breed is easy to groom as only light brushing is required except for the shedding season when the dead hair ust be carefully brushed out. As this is an active working breed, it needs sufficient amount of daily exercise and mental stimulation. A few long walks a day and an opportunity to swim now and again are ideal. Frisian watter dogs usually have 4 to 6 puppies in a litter.
