The Saarloos Wolfhound originated in the Netherlands around 1900s. Unmistakably similar to a wolf in appearance, this dog still retains a strong pack instinct and needs frim handling as a result, due in particular to its large size (27.5-29.5 inches at shoulder) and strong-willed nature. This powerful, independent breed was developed in the Netherlands by Leendert Saarloos, who noted that contemporaty dogs had become weakened with hip dysplasia and similar conditions. He resolved to rectify the situations and created this breed by crossing a German Shepherd Dog back to a wolf.
Saarloos died in 1969, just 6 years before his breed was accepted by the Dutch Kennel Club.
