Acepromazine Maleate
Acepromazine maleate is an antipsychotic agent and dopamine antagonist. IT is chemically related to phenothiazine. It is used little in humans, however frequently in animals as a sedative and antiemetic. 3
Acepromazine maleate is approved by the FDA for use in the dog, cats, and horse. This phenothiazine derivative is extensively used in veterinary practice. It is more potent than chlorpromazine and promazine and is effective parenterally in small doses.
The primary use of acepromazine has been as preanesthetic agent in the dog, cat, and horse. It markedly potentiates barbiturates and facilitates handling and restraint of animals. 2
