Amikacin Sulfate
Amikacin sulfate is a broad-spectrum aminoglycoside antibiotic derived from kanamycin. 1
Amikacin is active in vitro against Pseudomonas species, Escherichia coli, Proteus species (indole-positive and indole-negative), Providencia species, Klebsiella-Enterobacter-Serratia species, Acinetobacter (formerly Mima-Herellea) species and Citrobacter freundii. 2 It binds to the 30S ribosomal subunit thereby inhibiting protein synthesis. It is inactive against fungi, viruses and most anaerobic bacteria. 3
While parenteral use is only approved in dogs, amikacin is used clinically to treat serious gram negative infections in most species. It is often used in settings where gentamicin-resistant bacteria are a clinical problem. Amikacin is also approved for untrauterine infusion in mares. Amikacin should be used with extreme caution in patients with preexisting kidney disease. 3
