Ammonium Chloride
Ammonium chloride is an acidifying agent, a substance that causes the formation of salt. The acidifying properties of ammonium chloride are caused by its dissociation into ammonium and chloride ions. The ammonium cation is converted by the liver to urea with the release of a hydrogen ion. This ion combines with bicarbonate to form water and carbon dioxide. 2
Acidifiers are used for dissolution and prevention of struvite stones. The drugs is not used in kittens or in patients with severe kidney or liver impairments. It is normally used orally and is given with food to minimize the chances of stomach irritation and vomiting. It is not used with any acidifying diet. 3
Overdosing of ammonium chloride may cause metabolic acidosis with the following signs: vomiting, thirst and increased respiratory and heart rate. This medication is not recommended for use in pregnant animals. 4
