Caparsolate Sodium

Caparsolate sodium is a filaricide, a drug destructive to nematodes in the superfamily Filarioidea, especielly to adult worms; it has almost no activity to heartworm microfilaria. Its main ingredient is arsenamide sodium.

In dogs caparsolate sodium is used for the treatment and prevention of canine heartworm disease caused by Dirofilaria immitis. After intravenous administration, it is widely distributed in the body and concentrates in the liver and kidneys. The drug is metabolized and excreted i the bile and urine. Due to the extensive metabolism and toxicity of the drug, it is used with extreme caution in animals with liver, kidney, heart or ling problems, diabetes, gastrointestinal diseases or hypoadrenocorticism. The treated dog should have restricted activity to reduce the danger of massive pulmonary obstruction from dying adult heartworms. 2
