Clomipramine Hydrochloride

Clomipramine, a tricyclic antidepressant that selectively inhibits the uptake of serotonin in the brain. The drug is readily absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract and demethylated in the liver to form its primary active metabolite, desmethylclomipramine. It is chemically related to imipramine. 1

Clomipramine hydrochloride is used as part of comprehensive behavioral management program to treat separation anxiety in dogs greater than 6 months of age. 2

The most often seen side effects are short-term lethargy or sedation, mild vomiting and change in appetite. Other side effects may be encountered, which disappear if the dose is decreased or the drug is withdrawn: urine retention, constipation, increased heart rate, incoordination, decreased tear production. 3
