Desoxycorticosterone Pivalate

Desoxycorticosterone pivalate is a mineralocorticoid hormone and an analog of desoxycorticosterone. It primarily acts on the metabolism of sodium, potassium and water by decreasing excretion of sodium accompanied by increased excretion of potassium. Desoxycorticosterone pivalate binds to the mineralocorticoid receptor. 1

In dogs the drug is used as replacement therapy for the mineralocorticoid deficit with primary adrenocortical insufficiency. 2 The drug is intended for intramuscular use only. It is not administered to pregnant dogs, dogs suffering from congestive heart failure, severe kidney disease or edema. 3
