Dexmedetomidine Hydrochloride
Dexmedetomidine hydrochloride is an adrenergic alpha-agonist, hypnotic, sedative, and analgesic (non-narcotic) drug. It is chemically related to dexmedetomidine. Dexmedetomidine is a specific and selective alpha-2 adrenoceptor agonist. By binding to the presynaptic alpha-2 adrenoceptors, it inhibits the release if norepinephrine, therefore, terminate the propagation of pain signals causing sedation and analgesia. 1
The drug is administered to dogs for reversal of the sedative and analgesic effects of dexmedetomidine hydrochloride or medetomidine hydrochloride; to facilitate clinical examination and procedures, minor surgical procedures and minor dental procedures. Intended use by intramuscular injection only. 2,3
