Difloxacin Hydrochloride
Difloxacin hydrochloride is a fluoroquinolone broad-spectrum anti-bacterial antibiotic drug effective against both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. The drug is approved for use in dogs and cats. Fluoroquinolones are not approved for use in horses. The drug is available for oral and parenteral administration. It is readily absorbed into tissues and body fluids. Metabolism occurs in the liver and elimination is via kidneys and urine. 1,2
Difloxacin hydrochloride is used for management of diseases in dogs and cats associated with bacteria susceptible to difloxacin. Advese effects may include lesions in the joint articular cartilage during rapid growth phases in the dog. Difloxacin hydrochloride should be used with caution in animals with known central nervous system disorders. 2
