Dimethyl Sulfoxide

Dimethyl sulfoxide is a drug with anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and analgesic activities. The use of dimethyl sulfoxide includes: as an industrial solvent; in the treatment of interstitial cystitis (humans); as a topical veterinary drug; and as a vehicle to aid absorption of other medicinal agents. ⁴

Dimethyl sulfoxide is administered to dogs and horses as a topical application to reduce acute swelling due to trauma. ² This drug is not for use in dogs intended for breeding purposes and should not be administered by any other route. OTher topical medications should only be used when dimethyl sulfoxide treated area is thoroughly dry. ³

Dimethyl sulfoxide may cause adverse side effects following exposure via inhalation, ingestion, or skin contact. In the body, dimethyl sulfoxide metabolizes to dimethylsulfone which is further reduced to dimethylsulfide. ⁴
