Doxycycline Hyclate

Doxycycline, a long-acting tetracycline antibiotic derived from oxytetracycline, is used to inhibit bacterial protein synthesis and treat non-gonococcal urethritis and cervicitis, exacerbations of bronchitis in patients with COPD, and adult periodontitis. Doxycycline, like minocycline, is lipophilic and can pass through the lipid bilayer of bacteria. The drug is completely absorbed following intramuscular administration and extensively metabolized. 1

In dogs doxycycline hyclate (liquid) is used for treatment and control of periodontal disease; not used in dogs less than 1-year old; use of tetracyclines during tooth development has been associated with permanent discoloration of teeth.
