Fenbendazole

Fenbendazole is a broad-spectrum antihelmintic drug approved for use in sheep, cattle, horses, select species of large mammals, and dogs. This drug has been used but not approved in cats.

The drug acts by inhibiting metabolic enzymes and disrupting transport system in susceptible parasitic worms.2

Fenbendazole is indicated for control of large worms (Strongylus edentatus, S. equinus, S. vulgaris), small strongyles, pinworms (Oxyuris equi), and ascarids (Parascaris equorum) in horses; also for treatment of encysted mucosal cyathostome (small strongyle) larvae including early third stage (hypobiotic), late third stage, and fourth stage larvae in horses. 1

In dogs fenbendazole is used for the treatment and control of ascarids (Toxocara canis, Toxascaris leonina), hookworms (Ancylostoma caninum, Uncinaria stenocephala), whipworms (Trichuris vulpis), and tapeworms (Taenia pisiformis). 1

Fenbendazole usually does not cause adverse effects in cattle and horses. Vomiting infrequently occurs in dogs. 2
