Fentanyl Citrate
Fentanyl citrate is a narcotic opioid analgesic drug also used as an adjunct to general anesthetics. Fentanyl may increase the patient's tolerance for pain and decrease the perception of suffering, although the presence of the pain itself may still be recognized. In addition to analgesia, the drug is used as sedative. Fentanyl citrate used in the form of intravenous and intramuscular injections and dermal patches. 1
Combination of fentanyl citrate and droperidol is indicated for use in dogs as an analgesic and tranquilizer and for general anesthesia. The drug has also been used in small animals (cats, ferrets, rabbits, sheep, cattle, and horses.3
Fentanyl citrate is a potent CNS depressant and therefore may produce adverse side effects in very ill and debilitated patients and those with preexisting respiratory problems. 4
