Firocoxib

Firocoxib is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that belongs to the coxib class. It acts by inhibiting cyclooxygenase (COX-2). Firocoxib is available in chewable tablets and paste.

Firocoxib is indicated in dogs and horses for the control of pain and inflammation associated with osteoarthritis. This drug is also administered before soft-tissue or orthopedic surgery. 1,2

The most common adverse events reported in geriatric dogs over 7 years of age were diarrhea, vomiting, dark feces and loss of appetite. 3 Administration of firocoxib does not cause any adverse effects on gastrointestinal tract and other organs in healthy dogs and appears to have been well tolerated by dogs. 4 Some studies show that the reduction in lameness in the dogs treated with firocoxib was significantly greater than in the dogs treated with carprofen. 5
