Hetacillin Potassium
Hetacillin is a penicillin beta-lactam antibiotic used in the treatment of bacterial infections caused by susceptible, usually gram-positive, organisms. Hetacillin acts by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis via penicillin binding proteins (PBPs). Hetacillin is a semisynthetic penicillin prodrug which itself has no antibacterial activity, but is converted in the body to ampicillin and has actions and uses similar to those of ampicillin. 2
In dogs and cats, hetacillin potassium is indicated for the treatment against strains of organisms sensitive to hetacillin and associated with respiratory tract infections, urinary tract infections, gastrointestinal tract infections, skin infections, soft tissue infections, and postsurgical infections. 3
