Isoflupredone acetate is a highly effective injectable glucocorticoid (steroidal) agent with anti-inflammatory potency approximately 17 times that of hydrocortisone. Isoflupredone acetate is part of several antibiotic formulations indicated for the treatment of various inflammatory diseases of horses, dogs, cats, cattle, and swine. It is used in horses, dogs, and cats in the treatment or adjunctive therapy of certain ear and skin conditions when such conditions are caused by or associated with neomycin-susceptible organisms and/or allergy. In addition the product is indicated as superficial dressing applied to minor cuts, wounds, lacerations, abrasions and for postsurgical application where reduction of pain and inflammatory response is deemed desirable. Isoflupredone acetate is administered via oral or intramuscular route. It is not used in animals during last trimester of pregnancy where it may precipitate premature birth, fetal death, and retained placenta. Administration to pregnant dogs, rabbits, and rodents led to cleft palate in offspring. Other congenital anomalies may occur in dogs.
Drugs having diuretic or mineralocorticoid effects such as isoflupredone acetate can increase the potassium loss enhancing the excretion via urine and in sick and healthy cattle it should be used with caution. The drug is the recommended treatment for dyschondroplasia in swine medicine.
