Medetomidine
Medetomidine is an agonist of adrenergic receptors, a central nervous system depressant, that is used in veterinary medicine for its non-narcotic analgesic and sedative properties. This drug is mainly used in dogs and cats, but may also be used in small mammals. 1,3 Chemically this agent belongs to imidazoles.
Medetomidine (Domitor®) is used as a sedative and analgesic in dogs over 12 weeks of age to facilitate clinical examinations, clinical procedures, minor surgical procedures not requiring muscle relaxation, and minor dental procedures not requiring intubation. 2
This drug may cause severe adverse effects in dogs with cardiac diseases, dogs in shock, dogs which are severely debilitated, or dogs which are stressed due to extreme heat, cold, or fatigue. Medetomidine is not used in breeding or pregnant animals. 2
