Methenamine Mandelate

Methenamine mandelate is a veterinary antiseptic drug used in the treatment and prevention of recurrent urinary tract infections.

After oral administration, the drug is converted to formaldehyde, a bactericidal agent, which is active against Staphylococcus aureus, S. epidermidis, Enterococcus, E. Coli, Klebsiella, Proteus, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. ¹

In dogs and cats methenamine mandelate (Mesulfin Tablets) is indicated for the treatment of urinary tract infections in dogs such as cystitis, nephritis, prostatitis urethritis, and pyelonephritis. It is also used as an aid in the management of complications resulting from surgical manipulations of the urinary tract such as removal of calculi from the bladder, in ureterostomies, and in instrumentation of the urethra and bladder. ²

Formaldehyde is irritant and, unless dosage is reduced, it can cause secondary nephritis and cystitis in cats, who often develop anorexia and vomiting from it. ⁴
