Moxidectin

Moxidectin is a semi-synthetic macrolide antibiotic. It is used as anthelmintic in cattle and sheep and as heartworm preventive in dogs.

Moxidectin acts by affecting chloride ion channel activity in the nervous system of nematodes and arthropods causing paralysis and death of the parasites.

Moxidectin (ProHeart™, ProHeart® 6 Sustained Release Injectable for Dogs, Advantage Multi™ ) is approved by FDA for the prevention of heartworm disease caused by Dirofilaria immitis; and the treatment and control of intestinal roundworms (Toxocara canis and Toxascaris leonina), hookworms (Ancylostoma caninum and Uncinaria stenocephala), and whipworms (Trichuris vulpis); kills adult fleas and treats flea infestations (Ctenocephalides felis). 2

Moxidectin (Quest® 2% Equine Oral Gel, Quest® Gel, Quest® Plus Gel) is approved by FDA for use in horses for the treatment and control of large strongyles, pinworms, hairworms, large-mouth stomach worms, and horse stomach bots. This drug is not labeled for use in foals younger than 4 months of age. 2,1

Potential side effects in dogs may include vomiting, lethargy, diarrhea, nervousness, weakness, increased thirst and itching, and loss of appetite. No adverse side effects have been reported in horse when administered at labeled dose. 1
