Mupirocin
Mupirocin is an antibiotics originally isolated from Pseudomonas fluorescens (a common cause of food spoilage; frequently found in animal wounds). It is used topically, and is primarily effective against Gram-positive bacteria. Mupirocin is bacteriostatic (stops bacterial growth) at low concentrations and bactericidal (kills bacteria) at high concentrations. 5
Mupirocin (Bactoderm® Ointment and Muricin™ Ointment) is approved by FDA for use in dogs as topical treatment of bacterial infection of the skin, including superficial pyoderma, caused by susceptible strains of Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus intermedius. 2
