Neomycin Sulfate

Neomycin is an aminoglycoside antibiotic produced by Streptomyces fradiae. Aminoglycosides are useful primarily in infections involving aerobic, Gram-negative bacteria, such as Pseudomonas, Acinetobacter, and Enterobacter. Neomycin is composed of neomycins A, B, and C. It acts by inhibiting translation during protein synthesis.

Neomycin sulfate is a component of Hydeltrone Ointment (prednisolone sodium phosphate + neomycin sulfate) approved by the FDA as a topical and eye agent for use in superficial eye inflammations or infections limited to the conjunctiva or the anterior segment of the eye of dogs and cats, such as those associated with allergic reactions or irritants. ²

Neomycin sulfate is a component of Neo-Delta-Cortef® with Tetracaine Ointment (prednisolone acetate + tetracaine hydrochloride + neomycin sulfate) for use as eye ointment in dogs and cats.

Neomycin sulfate (Biosol® Sterile Solution 50 mg and Biosol® Sterile Solution) is administered by intravenous and intramuscular route to dogs and cats for the treatment of acute and chronic bacterial infection due to organisms susceptible to neomycin. ²

Neomycin sulfate is a component of Panolog®Ointment (triamcinolone acetonide + nystatin + thiostrepton + neomycin sulfate) administered as topical ointment to dogs and cats to clean affected skin areas and remove any encrusted discharge or exudate.

Neomycin sulfate is a component of Jenomycin Tablets (aminopropazine fumarate, neomycin sulfate tablets) used in dogs to control bacterial diarrhea caused by organisms susceptible to neomycin and to reduce smooth muscle contractions.

Because of low absorption, it is unlikely that acute overdosage would occur with oral neomycin. However, prolonged administration could result in sufficient systemic drug levels to produce neurotoxicity, ototoxicity and/or nephrotoxicity. Neomycin undergoes negligible biotransformation after parenteral administration. ⁵
