Anticonvulsants
Anticonvulsants are drugs used to prevent seizures or reduce their severity. Anticonvulsants block seizure initiation and propagation by blocking an abnormal event in a single neuron or synchronization of related neurons. Drugs acting at more than one point (e.g. phenobarbital) tend to be most effective. 2
Some of the convulsants available at present include the following:
- Phenytoin
- Fosphenytoin sodium
- Carbamazepine
- Clonazepam
- Ethosuximide
- Ethotoin
- Methsuximide
- Paramethadione
- Phenacemide
- Phensuximine
- Primidone
- Trimethadione
- Valproic acid
- Felbamate
- Phenobarbital
- Diazepam
