Cryptocoryne

<== Tiny crypto (Cryptocoryne wendtii)

This aquatic plant from the family Araceae grows 5 to 16 inches in length. The plant grows in areas where there is moderate to bright light. The broad leaves are firm and rigid. depending on the veriety and light conditions, they may be bronze, red, or green. The plant is very versatile and, contrary to popular belief, can adapt to water that is quite calcareous.

As with other species in this genus, this plant is very sensitive to sudden changes in water quality. Plants that have been cultered in and aquarium environment are much more robust than wild specimens and are easier to acclimate.

The substrate should be of plain gravel, although most crypts are best grown in small plastic mesh baskets. There are many propagated verieties of this species, resulting in different mature plant sizes. Old leaves should be removed before planting, as these no longer contibute to the plant's energy supply.
