Caring for Bulbs in June

Caring for Perennials in June

Orange Rose

Roses If roses don"t get 5 to 6 hours of full sun each day, they will become leggy and may not produce any blossoms at all. The only solution is to move the plant to a better location. Cool nights or dark, damp days can cause balling— that"s when blossoms open halfway and then stop. Cut off these blossoms; when weather conditions improve, good growth will begin again. If you live in an area where cool or foggy summers are common, select rose varieties that have fewer petals, and balling will occur less often.
Dwarf Twice a Year Blooming Pink Azalea

Shrubs Azaleas do best when they have a 2 to 4-inch layer of organic mulch surrounding them all season long.Use chopped leaves, peat moss, needles, or wood chips. Do not use leaves that have not been chopped, because they mat together and prevent water from getting into the soil. Mulch keeps the soil cool, reduces weed problems, and will slowly add humus to the soil.
If the leaves of your azaleas begin to yellow, your plants may be suffering from iron deficiency (chlorosis). The leaf margins and the tissue between the veins turn light in color, while the veins themselves may remain dark green. This yellowing can progress to the point where the leaves become very pale and turn brown at the tips. To quickly remedy iron deficiency apply an iron chelate, adding it to the soil or spraying it on the foliage. To permanently solve an iron deficiency, improve soil by adding 1 to 2 inches of compost each year.
