German Shepherd puppy eats dirt

My German Shepherd puppy has a very bad habit of eating mud and dirt. Can some one suggest me how to get rid of this habit of hers.

If your dog eats non-food materials...

If your German Shepherd puppy eats non-food materials, it may indicate an underlying health condition or a behavioral problem. Some veterinarian specialists associate pica with health disorders: iron deficiency anemia, chronic stomach or intestinal disease, such as chronic pancreatitis, swallowing problems, lead toxicity and other diseases. First, you should consult with your veterinarian surgeon about your dogs possible health problems. Your veterianrian may suggest changing your pet diet or including approved mineral supplements into your dog's diet.
