The American Quarter horse is the oldest recognized breed of horses in the United States. The breed was created in 17th century by crossing native horses of Spanish origin and English horses for the short-distance races (quarter-mile courses) and was capable of very quick starts. The Quarter horse's high adaptability, speed, endurance and kind disposition made it a favourite mount among frontiers and cowboys of the American West. The breed was officially found in 1949. It is considered to be the most popular horse in the world.
