Ibizan Hound Breed

The Ibizan Hound is thought to have been bred as a hunting dog for the Egyptian pharaohs. Centuries later it was brought to Spain by traders and named after the island of Ibiza. Ibizan Hounds are clean, well-mannered and very loyal to their families - though sometimes reserved with strangers. They are playful with children, if socialized with them early. The Ibizan's coat may be smooth or wiry.

Also called the Ibizan Podenco, the Podenco Ibicenco, the Ivicene, the Balearic Hound, the Balearic Dog, Podenco Mallorquin, or the Mallorquin this breed is closely related to the Pharaoh Hound.Ibizan Hound In the past it spread to the Spanish mainland in the region of Catalonia, where it is known by the Catalan name of Ca Eivissenc. He is a strong, swift hunter whose primary quarry is rabbits. Seemingly tireless while hunting, he can sustain his light trot for hours. During the chase he is unequal in his agility around and over obstacles in the field.

Playful, affectionate, very loyal, naturally aloof with strangers, and of stable temperament, Ibizans make wondeful family pets. They are easy to train and house break.

There are two types of coat in the Ibizan Hound: short (often called smooth) and wire-haired. The wire-haired Ibizan can have hair from one to three inches in length. The only acceptable colors are white and red, either solid or in combination.
