Kuvasz Breed

The Kuvasz's ancestors originated in Tibet. The breed was developed in Hungary where it was used for guarding, herding and hunting. It is believed that the modern Kuvasz is smaller than the original dogs that came out of Tibet. The Kuvaszok are aggressive and independent and not suitable for inexperienced dog owners or for city or apartment life. They have an extremely strong instinct to protect children in their families. The Kuvasz has a keen sense of smell and is used for tracking work.

The Kuvasz is the best known of the Hungarian dogs. His name, however, is not Hungarian, but Turkish, and it means "Guardian of Nobles." The Kuvasz has existed in his present form for over a thousand years. KuvaszThe Kuvasz is an outstanding farm dog, intelligent, methodical, fearless. He is a one-man dog who selects his friends and never forgets his enemies. He always knows who wishes to hurt his owner or himself and who is a friend. Unsurpassed as a watchdog and a farm dog, he must be handled as a puppy and carefully as adult. He is very sensitive to loud voices.

The Kuvasz has a highly developed parental instinct causing it to "adopt" lambs, kittens and children. Protective instincts are not always discerning. A scuffle between children could be perceived as a threatening situation.

Because their work ethic is still intact, if left to themselves, they will often take it to another level, assuming that you need to be protected from your dinner guests or a postman. The more the dog is included in family life, the more likely it is to protect it, yet accept guests. The average litter size is about 8 puppies.
