Chloramphenicol

Antibiotic first isolated from cultures of Streptomyces venequelae but now produced synthetically; has a relatively simple structure and was the first broad-spectrum antibiotic to be discovered; it acts by interfering with bacterial protein synthesis and is mainly bacteriostatic.
