Myelofibrosis
In myelofibrosis, the normal bone marrow is replaced by scar tissue, and blood cell formation occurs outside the marrow in the spleen and liver, a process that is mediated by cytokines arising from the abnormal clone. The spleen is usually enlarged. This condition occurs primarily in middle-aged and older adults and rarely in children. The only cure for myelofibrosis is a bone marrow transplant.
