A dog with a "human brain"

When you bring a miniature schnauzer home, it doesn't take long before the little dog
is a part of your family. He doesn't think he is a dog at all, no he is a person just
like his mommy and daddy. The are "the dog with the human brain".
These dogs do so well in the house. Once they are past the chewing stage as a
puppy, and they are house broken, they do great in the house. And they are so fun,
and affectionate and also funny to watch play. I couldn't imagine owning a different breed.

Miniature Schnauzers are WONDERFUL!!
We have 2 female salt and pepper Miniature Schnauzers. They will be 2 years old November 4. They are wonderful. Too cute and totally different personalities. The one we call our cuddler is actually the alfa female. She loves to be held and scrached. If you stop touching her she will paw at your hands until you begin again. The other is perfectly happy running after a ball rather than lay down and relax - she has to know what is going on every minute of every day. For a first time dog owner, I couldn't have chosen a better breed.

Schnauzer Tragedy
My wife's family has owned Mini-Schnauzer's for nearly 20 years now. We now are the proud owners of two of these wonderful loving dogs, Jack and Jill.
Recently Jack - our 3 year old, was out playing in the yard last Sunday (We have a dog safe, fenced in yard) when he was brutally attacked by someone leaving him with a shattered left femur, which required surgery.
He's recovery and loving attitude despite this trauma has been an astounding tribute to the breed.
If you would like to learn more please visit, www.help-jack.com for the full story and some pictures.

Juggling with Jack and Jill
2 weeks ago today Jack was attacked by some lunatic which left him with a shattered left femur. He is 3 years old and endured surgery to implant a plate and screws and wire to hold his femur together.
We also have Jill who is almost a year old. She and Jack are inseparable. Before Jack was attacked, they would play together, nap together, eat together and even sit together and watch squirrels through our front door.
Due to Jack's injury we have to keep them separate. Since then Jill has been having a hard time dealing with it. She's gone through at least 3 pairs of shoes this week alone!!!
Tomorrow we go to have the staples removed from Jack's left leg. That will be a great day in the recovery process for Jack since he hates to wear the E-Collar and if he doesn't wear the collar he tries to chew on the wound. It must be terribly itchy for him.
If you want to get to know more about Jack and what happened please visit www.help-jack.com.
Have a great Sunday!

Worried
My 7 1/2 year old honey bun has lost an inordinate amount of weight in the last 2-3 months. He went from 17-19 lbs. to 14 lbs. He is skin and bones. I upped his food. Still losing. Took him to the vet- all blood work checked out in the normal range, no parasites, no masses felt by the vet. So the suggestion was- take him home, feed him high quality puppy kibble and we'll see him in a month.
So far he still looks thin. My husband weighed him after 2 weeks and said he had gained a pound but he is still eating like he's been starved, isn't pooping out a great amount. The vet mentioned the 'c' word possibly.
Any thoughts?

suggestions regarding my schnauzer
Background: I adopted a nine moth old schnauzer five weeks ago.We have bonded and I could write pages about all of his good traits.
Problems: He is very intimidated with all dogs. We can’t go to dog parks without him shaking and wanting to go back in the car.
2) people-he never bites but growls at all people, children and adults.
He is a happy fun loving dog when we fast-walk at lunch time and dinner time (2-3 miles). He loves to chase squirrles and birds. He responds to my voice commands (come, sit etc).

Zoeys mom
We have a one year old mini schnauzer who is the best dog ever. She is great with our boys, loves to play with the cat and go on walks, will fetch frisbees and balls and learns tricks easily. We really think she is perfect. All of our friends and family comment on what a great dog she is too. Needless to say, she is an important part of our family. We recently almost lost her when she had a severe reaction to her annual shots at the vet. She started vomiting and went limp, had to have more shots and an IV to stop the allergic reaction, which was so severe that she went into shock. It has been two days and she is slowly recovering and we hope to have our playful and loving Zoey back soon.

i really do feel your pain, i lost a puppy to parvoe.
i have a mini schnauzer.her name is gabby. she was the runt of her litter. 7 pounds 4years old. she loved the new puppy, we had bought her the puppy to play with. she was young again. they played all day, napped together, played more.then he was gone.a week at the vet 700 dollars later i had to take the little yorkie home in a box. i felt that i lost a part of the family. gabby was sad. lonely again. so in time i bought her another friend named logan. we bought him after he had his second parvoe shot.so far so good. i admit im at a distant, gabby is happy again and that is all that matters.
the love that you have for zoey will make her strong.

I love my Schnauzer
I just found the board and am excited to be here. I have a 3.5 year old Mini Schauzer named Sophie. I adopted her when she was 10 weeks old and she is such a joy to have around.
The comment written that they make great dogs when the chewing stage is over is so right. Sophie was a big chewer but at about 18 months she proved herself to be trustworthy and got Run-of-the-House status.
So sorry about Jack---I hope he has healed and that he and Jill are playing happily together.
I wish we could post pictures here. This is almost a picture--the artist drew this for me from a photograph I took a few months ago. She is so pretty I wish she could have puppies to pass along those good genes!

Mini-Schnauzers and Running
I have two Miniature Schnauzers that are nine months old and they love their walks. They tend to be on the big side. The male is 23 lbs, and the female is 18 lbs. The vet says they are not fat, and I walk them regularly.
They are extremely energetic and easily walk two miles right now. Though I alternate so they don't do that everyday. In the summer I could take them off leash at the empty high school track because no one was around. They loved running off leash on the grass field! With school in session, I can't do that anymore.
Does anyone jog or run with their adult Mini Schnauzers? If so, how far? When did you determine they were old enough to jog regularly?

Exercise
I have a 2 year old, 23 lb. male Min. Schnauzer who is definitely not fat. He looks great, but we go on a 2 mile walk every morning and another mile to mile and a half at night. We only miss a day if it is raining. Walks are crucial. We also have a 4 year old Min. Schnoodle who is only 13 lbs.. They both love the long walks, and I'm in better shape too. Make sure you walk fast. A slow stroll at sniffing everything pace doesn't work. That seems to be enough for both of them. They also play with each other.
