Tonkinese Cat Breed

The Tonkinese breed was started by a Canadian breeder by crossing a sable Burmese with a seal point Siamese. Their short, silky, close-lying coat can be one of three patterns - solid, mink or pointed. These are very intelligent, calm and highly adaptable cats.

The Tonkinese is the result of complex genetics and the product of mating the Siamese and Burmese. The breed was developed in the 1960s by margaret Conroy, a Canadain cat fancier.

The Tonkinese enjoys another legacy from its breed founders. It has magnificent eyes that range from aquamarine to torquoise—a blend of th Siamese blue and the Burmese gold. This extremely inquisitive cat is also one of the most affectionate. It enjoys play and outdoor exercise, and enough attention from its owner. The Tonkinese is a healthy cat with a long life expectancy.

Personality The Tonkinese is a very affectionate cat, very devoted to its owner. Intelligent, lively and gentle, it seems to have all the good traits of its ancestors.

Tonkinese Colors The Tonkinese comes in a variety of colors. Natural Mink (warm brown with dark brown points); Champagne Mink (beige or buff-cream with medium brown points); Blue Mink (soft, blue-gray with darker, slate-blue popints); Platinum Mink ( pale silvery-gray with darker gray points). An additional color is sometimes recognized: Honey Mink (ruddy brown with darker brown points).
