Puggle
The Puggle is a relatively new hybrid. It is a cross between a purebred female beagle and purebred male Pug. The Puggle is an adorable sweet-tempered, wrinkle-faced, loyal dog that makes a fantastic candidate as a family pet.
In 1992, a breeder from Wisconsin by the name of Wallace Havens had the idea of breeding a hybrid dog using a Pug and a Beagle. Wallace had already been breeding purebred dogs and hybrids for many years. As an experienced breeder, Wallace was familiar with both breeds. He determined that the temperament and qualities of the two were quite desirable and would probably have the makings of a good family pet. However, at first, the first Puggles did not get a warm reception from the public and were difficult to sell.
The Puggle is a pleasure to live with and a delight to own. One of its most endearing qualities is that he desires to be in your company. The Puggle wants to be a loyal friend and strives to please his owner. It is a social dog that will gladly share the company of any family member or friend. Although the Puggle is happy to give affection to other family members, it may, at times, demand attention from the one who feeds him or pays the most attention to him.
Being a perceptive breed, the Puggle easily tunes into its family daily routine, habits, desires, idiosyncracies, and expectations. If anything is out of place or the routine changes, the Puggle will immediately recognize the difference and may give you a look or even bark in protest. If he senses you are upset he may atempt to comfort you by snuggling up next to you. At bedtime, the Puggle prefers to sleep with his owner if allowed to but can easily adapt to a bed of its own or a crate.
Self-assured and attentive, the Puggle carries itself with a sort of cocky confidence yet has a friendly and sensitive nature. Protective of his house and family, the Puggle will do his best to alert the family of intruder. Being an excellent communicator, the Puggle has various barks and whines to convey what he is feeling or trying to express.
A Puggle has quite a hearty appetite and is not very picky about what he eats. In fact, he rarely gets full and believes that more of just about anything is better. This can be a detriment to his weight. Because of his extrakeen sense of smell, the Puggle is aware of most eadible things in his range. Do not be folled into thinking the coast is clear if you see your Puggle sleeping on its bed. For the Puggle, the next meal is of prime importance.
All Puggles are fast learners. Puggles do not require regular grooming. However, you should brush its coat from time to time.
From the Pug, the Puggle may sometime have some form of eye discharge. A small amount of discharge in the corner of the eye is normal but will not be present in most Puggles
Puggle can be at risk for a host of known diseases found in Pugs and Beagles: entropion, Pug dog encephalitis, cherry eye, epilepsy, lameness.
Puggles can be registered with the American Canine Hybrid Club (ACHC), the main registry for mixed breeds like Puggle. The specialty breeders can provide you with registration forms, vaccination records and lineage information. These breeders usually breed their dogs for betterment of the breed, not just for making money.
When looking for a puppy, make sure that the dam is a registered, purebred female Beagle, and the sire is a registered, purebred Pug. These new Puggle litters will be registered with the ACHC. This will help ensure that you are getting predictable results. Some backyard breeders are mating Puggles together. These are second generation Puggles which may have health complications and temperament problems.
