Rottweiler Dog Breed
The Rottweiler breed was established at the commercial and agricultural town of Rottweil where it continued to herd but also to protect against thieves and other predators. The Rottweiler is a naturally protective animal. Because of his strong-mindedness, the Rottweiler requires an owner who will see that he gets proper training in order to make him a good family pet.
Today this breed is universally known as Rottweiler, but in earlier times it was sometimes called the Rottweil Dog.  In Germany it was first called the Rottweiler Metzerhund which translates literally as the "Butcher's Dog". Although this dog's original function was to control the cattle on their way to the slaughter it also acquired other duties acting as a livestock guardian and eventually as a protector of the property. The Rottweiler is a medium to large dog that is one of the strongest and most powerful dogs in the world. With all their strength, they are very agile and well-balanced. Rotties are very loyal and protective of their family. Early socialization with other dogs and children is very important. Owning a Rottweiler requires a tremendous responsibility and commitment. This is not a breed for timid owners.
