The Schipperke originated in the 16th century in Belgium where he was used to hunt vermins and watch for intruders. He is a very active, curious, smart and furry dog that gets along with children and other pets in the family household. Schipperkes are usually wary of strangers and make good watchdogs. They need gentle but firm training from their puppyhood. Their coat needs to be brushed once a week. Schipperkes need plenty of daily exercise.
