Shar-Pei

The Shar-Pei originated in China over 2,000 years ago and was bred for hunting and dog fighting. Wrinkles over skull and withers, small ears and "hippopotamus" muzzle impart to the Shar-Pei a unique look. Shar-Pei is calm, independent, loyal and affectionate to his family. A distinctive feature of the breed is its coat: short, harsh and bristly with no undercoat. He is of a very independent mind and very protective of his property and humans. Shar-Pei can be of any lid color, except white. Tail and rear part of thighs are frequently of a lighter color.

Chinese Shar-Pei

Shar-Pei are very intelligent dogs and they excel in obedience trials. Extremely devoted and loving, Shar-Pei thrive both in the country and in apartments. They are considered to be a "one-man" dog. Shar-Pei will not destroy your home and aggravate your neighbors by howling when left alone for long hours. They are naturally suspicious of strangers and protective but will not be aggressive toward visitors to your home. They have a stable temperament and are very good with children. Shar-Pei do not shed or smell. All the above combined with firm but gentle training make them a good family dog.
