Schapendoes Dog Breed

The Schapendoes originated in the Netherlands around 1700s and was first used for herding sheep. This active, friendly dog has a long, straight, powerful back. A dense, shaggy coat gives it a friendly appearance, although as a working dog it is a hardy and fearless herder and guardian of its flock. There is now no record of the early origins of this breed. It is believed to be a very old breed with a similar descent to that of the Briard and the Bergamasco.
The decline in sheep herding has seen this breed's numbers fall. Outside its native country the Schapendoes is also known as Dutch Sheepdog.
