Of the 15 species of spiny-tailed lizards about 8 are now captive bred. All species are rather quiet and confiding, all are popular with hobbyists. males of some species are colorful. These lizards are sun-basking, heat-loving, arid-land specialists. They have developed special adaptations. In the morning they are dark gray to black, as the dark color absorbs the heat when they are still cold from the chilly night. When the body temperature becomes optimal, the color changes to light sandy beige. They use their heavy spiny tails for defense and also for showing aggressive behavior.

Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a major bacteria that causes ear disease, pneumonia, enteritis, and sudden death in chinchillas. This bacterium is also a leading cause of hospital-related infections in humans. For some reason, the infection is widely spread in chinchillas, including strains resistant to the antibiotics. Many infected pet chinchillas are healthy and have no clinical signs. Chinchillas should be fed regularly every day, generally in the early evening before their peak of activity, and again in the morning. Some chinchillas may develop convulsions if fed long after their preferred feeding time and, if fed late, they may become fur chewers. Where possible, pellets specially formulated for chinchillas should be used, but if these are not available, rabbit or guinea pig pellets can be used. Because pellets do not contain sufficient fiber, they should be supplemented with good hay.

There are more than 100 recognized rabbit breeds. The Dutch rabbits make good pets. The Flemish giant rabbit is a very popular and it comes in a variety of colors. When mature, it will weigh more than 14 pounds. The Netherland dwarf can become dominant over much larger rabbits, but they are very tame to people. YOu shoul also remember that rabbits do chew and you need to provide them with ways to dig and chew that are acceptable and safe. Otherwise, it is likely that your rabbit will chew electrical cords and dig holes in furniture cushions. Parrot toys are mostly safe for rabbits. Since the rabbit's teeth grow continuously throughout life, facilitating chewing by offering toys may help prevent dental problems. A basket or box filled with hay can provide the rabbit with an area to dig in.

Pseudomonas aeruginosa bacteria is a major infectious agent that causes otitis media, pneumonia, septicaemia enteritis, and sudden death in chinchillas. This bacterium is also a leading cause of hospital-acquired infections in humans. Recently, this pathogen has acquired resistance to many therapeutic antibiotics. Because of rapid disease progression and high mortality rates often seen in chinchillas, maintaining a clean environment should be performed to help prevent P. aeruginosa infection. Especially in urban areas, daily exposure to domestic animals, has been described as a potential risk factor for the development of respiratory symptoms and allergic disease, and is an increasingly common problem. The most frequent symptoms after exposure to chinchilla are rhinitis, conjunctivitis, asthma, and contact dermatitis.

Bats are commonly associated with vampire lore and thus elicit largely fearful reactions despite the fact that they are a vital and valuable part of the ecosystem. Bats provide a variety of essential services from pest control to plant pollination. Despite the benefits of bats to the environment and the economy, bats are suffering at the hands of humans. They are victims of turbines, human encroachment, pesticides, and, most recently, white nose syndrome. Because of their critical importance to the environment, humans should do what they can to help protect bats. There are about 1260 species of bats that vary greatly in their appearance, diet, and behaviors. They are found everywhere from seaside to mountains and deserts. Bats are estimated to save corn farmers one billion USD globally by preying on agricultural pests. Bats indirectly inhibit fungal growth and toxic compounds harmful to corn through their elimination of these pests. Insectivorous bats have been found to be worth more than three billion USD annually due to their destruction of agricultural pests. Bat pollination occurs in about 528 plant species worldwide. Bats also assist in the dispersal of plant species such as figs and palms by ingesting and then carrying them to new locations. Although humans pose significant risks to bats, there are also several ways in which the public can assist in saving bat: by planting wildflower gardens and by erecting bat houses on their properties. Contrary to popular belief, rabies is not highly common in bats. Rabies exposure from bats is comparable to that from dogs and less that from cats.

My bearded dragon will eat out of my hand but runs and bites when I try to handle him. Why is he doing that?

drspock Friday, April 12, 2013
Bearded dragons rare bite people. Bites generally will happen in only three situations: the dragon is very scared or startled, you interrupt him during a territorial display, or you are hand-feeding him. If you are bitten, remain calm. Wash out the wound with soap and water. It's not a bad idea to use some type of antiseptic, such as peroxide. Dry off the area and apply an antibiotic and a bandage.

Avitaminosis D is common is basking lizards and turtles. Vitamin D (not D2 as in mammals) is necessary for uptake of calcium and phosphorus, and is therefore essential for correct bone and shell formation. Absence of sunlight may result in a deficiency with the same symptoms as calcium-phosphorus imbalance.
Vitamin D can be obtained commercially and can be mixed with a calcium supplement and sprinkled over the food, or a vitamin and mineral supplement may be given. it should not be used without calcium or the calcium in the animal's skeleton may be exploited by the vitamin (in other words, it will be dissolved away and used elsewhere in the body). Lighting units which produce and almost natural type of light may be beneficial for basking animals, but should not be relied on totally to take place of vitamin D. Black lights, onthe other hand, seem to emit sufficient ultra-violet light to stimulate vitamin D production beneath the skin, and, provided there is sufficient calcium in the animal's diet, additional supplementation may not be necessary.

Why do snails like to climb out of the water every now and then?

andromeda7089 Friday, April 12, 2013 4:50:47 PM
Snails come out of water for several reasons. Snails can survive without water during aestivation, which is prolonged survival of dormant snails out of water. Some species of snails, such as B. nasutus, are able to survive without water for 5-8 months. Another type of behavior is called water-quitting. Diapause and water-quitting may occur when snails try to avoid molluscicide. Snails also come out of water in response to water-borne odors from their predators. Some snails, such as Apple snails, climb up the stalks of water plants and lay their eggs above the water's surface, where they develop out of reach of fish. The snails drop into water after hatching.
