    Overview

The Appenzell Cattle Dog originated in Appenzell, Switzerland. Also known as Appenzeller Sennenhund, Appenzell Cattle Dog, or simply the Appenzeller, this is one of the four Swiss Mountain Dogs, distinguished from the other three by its tightly curled, spitz tail.

    Roles

The breed was used as a farm dog and cattle dog. After helping with the movement of the cattle, it was employed to keep guard over the herds and, on market days, pulled carts with farm produce to the market stall. When avalanches occurred, it was used as a rescue dog.

    Character

Appenzeller is always described as intelligent, high-spirited, self-assured, fearless, cheerful, but suspicious of strangers.
